We Are The Housefire

I could feel responsible for it, but we were all praying for it; tucked away behind closed doors - heads on level with the bed and knees balanced to distribute the shock of natural disasters. Get ready to blame every transgression on a vengeful and understanding god in the machine. Reflect responsibility onto a entity that we only communicate with when we want to. Tell me cos I already know the answer - Have you ever prayed for the prod that would give you no choice but to throw caution to the wind and let it blow you away in a manic flurry of your past? I'd give an arm, I'd give a leg. I'd give a house. I'd let the flames rise high and let them light my way to whatever the fuck awaits me.

The Flitcraft Case

(Inspired by Dashiell Hammelt's novel The Maltese Falcon)
What would you do to way up in another place, for once in your life, just to see what would happen? Beams can fall and all joy is so fleeting that if you try to sustain it, it becomes redundant and devoid of meaning. Promise me that if you try to run away, you won't up in the same place you were so desperate to leave behind. You have to turn your back when you abscond and you have to trust what you're running away from not to catch up or make any sudden moves. What would you do?

Where is your soul? What speaks to you? What makes you tick in the place where I'm wondering if you have a heart? In what time does it beat? Does it ever align with the poise of something greater than you would have imagined? Does it shake in place - quiver and bypass arteries? Do you tremble in your sleep to kick and jerk awake, clinging to dreams that share ideal and nightmare, leaving you sick to your stomach until you drag yourself from bed, kicking and screaming at the day? How can you be every one's friend, and no one's friend at the same time? I could see you cutting a love poem short just to salvage the rhyme (and if you'd listen, then you'd hear the whole world passing you by while you sat with folded arms, waiting for something to kick the chair out from under you).

(For Sara Bilezekian, 1978 - 2002)
May all bridges be burned, so there's to tumble from and nothing to tempt us when we cross with despairing hearts. May all rivers be damned, so there's a dry bed on which to lay, and no current to sweep broken hearts away. No current like the present, which is empty, inhabited by shadows etched in dust and burned to the meat on the back of my hand. This screen is to the past, projected in front of me, playing everything I'd like to edit, to try again, to whisper in my own ear "Every chance can be your last." This is "How to Light a New York City Stove" with care and precision, to scorch frozen hands, and flicker ephemeral, across faces smeared with non-linear American dirt. May love obsess you while death surrounds you.
